Even though one wouldn’t know it by the weather, it’s fall in Southern California and with it comes the world’s favorite beer festival, Oktoberfest. Don’t have the time or money to fly to Munich? Don’t worry, Los Angeles folks, we’ve got you covered. Here are 5 Oktoberfest Celebrations happening around the city.
Boasting the longest running Oktoberfest event in Los Angeles, Alpine Village (located in Torrance) has been celebrating their version of the Bavarian festival since 1968. One of Germany’s favorite beer brands, Warsteiner, will be the main libation for the traditionalists, and for those find their palate a little closer to home, fear not, there will be various ciders, craft brews and wines served as well (selection changes every week). In addition to copious amounts of beer, there will be traditional Oom-Pah songs as well as modern Oktoberfest classics sung. Interactive elements are present at the village as well, with the chicken dance commencing every hour and competitions such as Das Boot.
Taking place right off the 405 freeway at The Olympic Collection Banquet and Conference Center, LA Oktoberfest is the place to be for all the west-siders looking to show some Bavarian spirit. Enjoy singing along to old time drinking tunes while guzzling brews served by beautiful beer maidens. Don’t miss entering the stein-holding contest or silent auction!
Oktoberfest at the Fairplex
For those situated East of Los Angeles and beyond, be sure to check out Oktoberfest at the Pomona Fairplex. One needs not look further than the website description, “Bavarian music. Beer.Authentic German Food. Beer. Chicken Dance. Beer. Games and Prizes. Beer.” There will be multiple music acts such as The Rheinlanders, a traditional German Oom-Pah band, as well Queen, Journey, and Led Zeppelin tribute bands.
Old World Oktoberfest
While technically not taking place in Los Angeles proper, this Orange County festival celebrates Oktoberfest like no other (as one would expect from the winners of “Best Bratwurst in California”). Old World has been celebrating since 1977 and is showing no signs of slowing down, offering multiple types of authentic German beer, food, and bands. Don’t forget to visit Kinderfest (Oktoberfest fun for the whole family) at Old World taking place every Sunday in October and the first Sunday of November.
Burbank Beer Festival
The Burbank Beer Festival is not akin to the ones being celebrated in Munich, but they do have one very important factor in common: beer. The Burbank Beer Festival will host over 85 beers on tap consisting of local and non-local brews. For those who choose to abstain from, or are not yet old enough to consume, keep an eye out for art vendors, handcrafted products, and the live entertainment performing all day long.
