This week, we’re recognizing some of our favorite San Diego event planners and employees from the first quarter. These “super people” help create The Event Team experience from start to finish. Wherever they are, “superior events” are sure to follow!

Full Time Employee of the Quarter – Bill Yahres, VP Business Development

First up, Bill Yahres is our full time employee of the quarter! Here at The Event Team since 1993, Bill is a veteran among San Diego event planners. (Coincidentally, he’s a also a U.S. Veteran).

“I’ve been impressed with Bill over the last few months,” said President Matt Robbins. “He’s had great success going after Convention business and has proven that his methods work. Also, he shows great leadership and helps broaden our DMC network.”

VP of Sales Romy Linde said, “Bill’s already landed some big clients for 2018. What’s more, he works hard to ensure the success of The Event Team and is a team player.”

Additional thoughts from VP of Operations Paige Weeber: “Bill has a heart of gold and keeps The Event Team as a priority. In the past few years, he’s found new ways to obtain business and strengthen relationships with industry planners. Bill is the “class clown” of the office; you can always count on him to make you smile.”

Vendor of the Quarter – Half Door Brewing

Finally, Stacy Drayne at Half Door Brewing is our vendor of the quarter. This small but inviting brewery in East Village is a favorite stop on our Trolley ‘n Taps tour. Not only is Stacy is a gem  to work with, she also accommodates our groups expertly. Stacy’s professionalism and flexibility make her a gem among San Diego event planners. Full Time Employee of the Quarter – Romy Linde, Director of Sales

Romy leads the company in sales, but she also leads in other ways. Besides managing her own accounts, she also creates sales strategies, trains and mentors her colleagues, facilitates meeetings, and more. “Romy had a fabulous year,” said President/CEO Matt Robbins. “She has been an integral part of our team for nearly 15 years and continues to evolve in her position. I’m very proud of her and can’t wait to see her 2017 sales plan in action.”

Field Staff Employee of the Quarter – Marnie Buddo

Marnie continues to be a pillar of the The Event Team field staff. When she is assigned to an event, she always arrives on time, with a happy, positive attitude and always goes above and beyond to make sure the guests and clients have a great experience. VP of Operations Paige Weeber sings Marnie’s praises: “It doesn’t matter if it is a small Gaslamp transfer or a huge off-site event; Marnie ensures that everyone has a good time to and from an event. Her reliability, positive attitude, and ability to think quickly on her feet made her an easy candidate for Employee of the Quarter.” Thank you Marnie for all you do for The Event Team!

Hotelier of the Quarter – Khoa Hoang, Westin San Diego

We love all our hotel partners, but this quarter Khoa Hoang from Westin San Diego was particularly exceptional. “Khoa is a very detail-oriented convention services manager and a tremendous pleasure to work with,” said National Sales Manager Steve Larson. “She is very informative about her clients’ needs and always available at a moment’s notice!” Thank you Khoa for trusting The Event Team to work with you and your clients – you can count on us!

Vendor of the Quarter – Innovative Entertainment

Last but definitely not least is our wonderful vendor of the quarter. Peggy Jewell of Innovative Entertainment is one of our most valued vendor partners. “Most groups want entertainment at their events but don’t always know what they want,” said Weeber. “With just a few details, Peggy and her team always put together great suggestions and always include a few “out of the box” ideas to keep our proposals fresh and up to date for clients. Also, her team is always available, and their onsite presence is always appreciated to keep the talent on track.” Thank you Peggy for all your years of partnership and friendship!

In celebration of Thanksgiving, we took a moment to reflect on some of the things we’re most grateful for. Here are just some of the many blessings we’re counting this year:

Bill Yahres, VP Business Development

After 23 years at The Event Team I am still having fun!  I have amazing friends, a loving family and perfect health. The only thing better is realizing this each and every day.

Geraldine Caedo, General Manager L.A.

Personally, I am forever grateful for my friends of over 30 years whom I got to spend time with this fall. Some things never change and I’m definitely grateful for that. Professionally, I’m thankful for my team who, despite our “family” squabbles, are always loyal, supportive, and will take it to the streets for one another.

General Manager Geraldine Caedo Earns DMCP Certification

What an appropriate week to give props to our Los Angeles General Manager Geraldine Caedo, who recently passed her DMCP certification exam, and who more recently (yesterday) celebrated her birthday!

What is a DMCP?

According to the Association of Destination Management Executives, “Destination Management professionals who earn their Destination Management Certified Professional (DMCP) designation demonstrate the highest level of knowledge and commitment to the destination management profession. To earn the DMCP designation, an individual must have years of experience in the field, active involvement in continuing education programs and have passed an exam that covers the body of knowledge of all aspects of destination management.”

The Process

We caught up with Geraldine this week and asked her to explain more about the exam.

geraldine.3

Why did you want to pursue your DMCP certification?
GC: I have always believed in continuing education. Becoming a DMCP was the most logical step in advancing my professional growth. It was also a great opportunity to gain mastery of best practices in our field.

Studying for the vigorous DMCP exam requires a lot of prep/study time. What was one of the most challenging things about it?
GC: In order to qualify to sit for the DMCP exam, one has to have a certain amount of applicable experience. In preparing for the exam, I quickly realized that my many years of experience actually created some challenges. So much of what we do is problem-solving which is counter-intuitive to the curriculum. Instead of thinking in terms of the best solution, my mind is trained to consider all possible solutions. Since there was only 1 correct answer to each question, I had to consciously not overthink, which is very difficult for me.

Did you learn anything new or interesting about the industry as you prepared for the test?
GC: It is important to examine how DMCs came to be, how they have evolved over time, and how they continue to evolve in order to stay competitive and relevant.

Growth is a running theme in your role as Los Angeles General Manager. In addition to taking steps toward your own professional growth, you’ve worked tirelessly toward growing your team all while keeping up with the city’s boom in business travel. In what ways do you anticipate the Los Angeles meeting and events industry changing in the coming years, and how do you plan on adapting to those changes at The Event Team?
GC: It is such an exciting time to live and work in Los Angeles right now, especially for the meeting and events community. From the return of the NFL to the pursuit of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games to the countless hotels and multi-use spaces being developed throughout the city, you can literally see our city growing in order to accommodate being one of the world’s top destinations. It’s imperative for us to keep pace with that growth by not just knowing the new and interesting offerings around town, but also by maintaining an awareness of the client experience and staying true to our commitment of personal and individualized service.

The Praises

At The Event Team, we’re so excited to boast another DMCP certification on staff! (This makes 4 and counting.) Geraldine’s colleagues are always quick to sing her praises:

“I was very impressed when Geraldine asked me if she could go for her DMCP certificate. I had been in the industry over 25 years when I took the test and it was still not easy to pass. To her credit she stuck with it and took the test with a very short time to prepare. She passed with flying colors and I am very  proud of her.”
Matt Robbins, President

“From working long hours in the office to being available to help every department, I wasn’t sure how she was going to find time to study for the test, but the determination and dedication she showed throughout her weeks leading to the test was unreal! I am proud that she was able to add yet another accomplishment to her academic belt and passed the DMCP!”
Marcie Booth, Senior Operations Manager

“I’m so proud of how she conquered the DMCP, just like almost everything else she sets out to do. I love that her door is always open and appreciate the fact that she’s as willing to learn as she is to teach. Her leadership is the heartbeat of the L.A. office and I’m grateful to work with her.”
Jameela Jackson, National Sales Manager

“Geraldine’s an awesome leader of the L.A. office; I don’ know what we would do without her!”
John-Carlo Boyle, Sales Assistant

“Behind every successful team is a boss that always seems to know everything. So it wasn’t surprising when Geraldine passed her DMCP exam (with flying colors, no doubt)! Leadership isn’t a skill, it’s a talent and Geraldine is extremely talented!”
Aimee Nobleza, Operations Assistant

Marcie Booth Promoted to Senior Operations Manager

Congratulations are in order for one of our “super people!” Last week, The Event Team destination management company promoted Marcie Booth from Operations Manager to Senior Operations Manager. “Marcie has quickly become an outstanding member of the Operations team,” said President/CEO Matt Robbins. “She is constantly receiving rave reviews from clients and she embodies our Core Value to ‘provide  exceptional and dependable service through prompt practice.’ We are very happy to promote her to Senior Operations Manager and look for more great things from Marcie.”

Geraldine Caedo, General Manager of our Los Angeles event planning office, said “In her almost 2 years with The Event Team, Marcie has truly emerged as a leader, not only in our Los Angeles office, but for the company as a whole. I’m very impressed by the growth and ambition that Marcie displays on a daily basis. As a Senior Operations Manager, in addition to running programs, she will be pursuing opportunities to improve efficiencies as well as develop programs to foster relationships with our vendors and field staff. I look forward to seeing how Marcie will grow with her new position.”

Marcie Booth Los Angeles Event Planner

We took a moment to chat with Marcie about her role at The Event Team and within the events industry. Take a moment to get to know her below!

TET: What do you love about Operations?
MB: I love that I get to interact with our clients and their guests. The reaction after they had a successful program always makes me smile!

TET: You have such a great relationship with our Los Angeles clients, staff, and vendors? What’s the key to building relationships in this industry?
MB: I try to be open and understand what their needs are. I’m not a miracle worker, but I try my best to make their event, logistically perfect from start to finish.

TET: You’ve been in the Los Angeles event industry for several years now. What changes have you noticed?
MB: The biggest changes are that people are more savvy and want to be more a part of the planning process. Five years ago, you could be given a budget and a vision and run with it; now, I’ve noticed that with the concept of Pinterest, planners want to give you specific ideas on their vision.

TET: You’ve operated programs for The Event Team from Santa Barbara to San Diego…what has been your favorite event so far and why?
MB: Wow, that’s hard because I’ve operated some pretty cool events! I have two that stand out: the first would be a beautiful cocktail reception at the Ritz Carlton Marina Del Rey. It was my first chance to have real input on an event at The Event Team; the overhead lanterns were beautiful and added a fun California chic look to the reception. The second would be one client where I got to work in Los Angeles and Orange County all in one program!

Ritz Carlton Marina del Rey Events

TET: When you’re not operation flawless events for The Event Team DMC, you curate a lifestyle blog called Curvy Girls Can. Tell us more!
MB: Curvy Girls Can is a lifestyle blog that is all about being a self-loving, confident woman with curves! It doesn’t matter your size or the kind of curves you have, my mission is help women love the skin they’re in and sharing my personal experiences of food prep and fitness to beauty tips and dating.
