6 Last Minute Ideas for your Office Holiday Party

If you’re feeling a little Ho Ho Hum about this year’s office holiday party, don’t fret! The Event Team is here with 6 last minute ideas to help make your event merry and bright:

1. Santa’s Workshop: Cookie-Decorating and Wreath-Making Stations

Whether or not their DIY game is on point, guests always appreciate interactive stations at work parties because they offer an opportunity to do something other than make awkward conversation about their holiday travel plans. Station options include cookie-decorating, wreath-assembly, ornament design, and more!

2. Reindeer Games: Merry Minute to Win It and Caroling Karaoke

If your team is a more competitive bunch, we suggest hosting a good old fashioned holiday game night. Divide guests into teams and battle against the clock in a series of holiday-themed challenges in our Merry Minute to Win It game. After everyone has enough egg nog (aka liquid courage) break out the karaoke machine for our Caroling Karaoke competition.

6. That’s a Wrap: Volunteering and Holiday Bonding Activities

If a holiday party didn’t quite make it on your 2016 wishlist, there are still ways to sprinkle a little joy throughout your company. Take a day out of the office and volunteer your time toward a local community program. Gift-wrapping donated toys for youth outreach organizations or assembling  military care packages are perfect options for this time of year. The Event Team can also arrange a casual bonding activity for your team, such as a local brewery tour or a friendly game of footgolf (our team just did this last week and had a blast!).

Teambuilding Spotlight: Tried and True, Fresh and New

The Event Team is pulling into the homestretch of 2016 with a focus on teambuilding. In addition to operating some of our most popular programs, we’re also continuing to broaden our teambuilding repertoire by investigating the newest trends in corporate event networking and group bonding activities. Here’s a quick glimpse of our recent events and findings!

Tried and True: Olympics in San Diego, CA

Earlier this month, The Event Team organized a casual Olympics teambuilding activity in La Jolla Cove for a small group of 24 attendees staying at the Grande Colonial. We offer several variations of this program depending on the group’s desired level of physical activity as well as the client’s goals, objectives, and budget. This particular interpretation, while not too physically demanding, was engaging and hilarious nonetheless. Activities included puzzles, giant Jenga, rubber chicken archery (it’s as funny as it sounds).

Tride and True: Iron Chef in Los Angeles, CA

Last week, the Los Angeles team put together a appetizing Iron Chef event and catered lunch for a corporate group of 25 local guests at an offsite venue called Foothill Kitchens. Donning their aprons and chef hats, each team worked together to create and present an original dish to our expert chef/judge.

Fresh and New: Vertical Board Games

This new networking trend is a wonderful and entertaining way to encourage socializing at a corporate function. Classic and modern board games (everything from Candyland to Cards Against Humanity) are suspended on magnetic, vertical boards. Whether attendees are complete strangers or go way back, these games are a perfect way to facilitate networking and develop relationships without the awkward small talk or the aggressive sales pitch. Guests can play on their leisure, or we can offer several formal teambuilding variations complete with scorekeeping and prizes. The setup is not only fun; it’s functional. Each board is double-sided which allows for groups of up to 8 to be socializing around each table. Since all elements of the game (board, game pieces, timers) are suspended on a vertical plane, there is plenty of room on each table for food and drinks. Boards can be branded with company logos or event hashtags, and they also are a great way to post or distribute information, business cards, brochures, and the like.

The Event Team - Vertical Board Games

Fresh and New: Style Your Soles CSR Program

This trending corproate teambuilding event combines art, fashion, philanthropy, and fun. Teams are given a designated number of TOMS blank canvas shoes and are challenged with the task of creating their own line of shoes using fabric markers, stencils, and other decorations. Teams must market and pitch their shoe line as well. At the end of the competition, a winner is decided based on best design and presentation. A representative from a local charity will be onsite to accept the donation. As if the event wasn’t cool enough, TOMS also matches your local donation with additional pairs given to children in Africa, Asia or South America.

General Manager Geraldine Caedo Earns DMCP Certification

What an appropriate week to give props to our Los Angeles General Manager Geraldine Caedo, who recently passed her DMCP certification exam, and who more recently (yesterday) celebrated her birthday!

What is a DMCP?

According to the Association of Destination Management Executives, “Destination Management professionals who earn their Destination Management Certified Professional (DMCP) designation demonstrate the highest level of knowledge and commitment to the destination management profession. To earn the DMCP designation, an individual must have years of experience in the field, active involvement in continuing education programs and have passed an exam that covers the body of knowledge of all aspects of destination management.”

The Process

We caught up with Geraldine this week and asked her to explain more about the exam.

geraldine.3

Why did you want to pursue your DMCP certification?
GC: I have always believed in continuing education. Becoming a DMCP was the most logical step in advancing my professional growth. It was also a great opportunity to gain mastery of best practices in our field.

Studying for the vigorous DMCP exam requires a lot of prep/study time. What was one of the most challenging things about it?
GC: In order to qualify to sit for the DMCP exam, one has to have a certain amount of applicable experience. In preparing for the exam, I quickly realized that my many years of experience actually created some challenges. So much of what we do is problem-solving which is counter-intuitive to the curriculum. Instead of thinking in terms of the best solution, my mind is trained to consider all possible solutions. Since there was only 1 correct answer to each question, I had to consciously not overthink, which is very difficult for me.

Did you learn anything new or interesting about the industry as you prepared for the test?
GC: It is important to examine how DMCs came to be, how they have evolved over time, and how they continue to evolve in order to stay competitive and relevant.

Growth is a running theme in your role as Los Angeles General Manager. In addition to taking steps toward your own professional growth, you’ve worked tirelessly toward growing your team all while keeping up with the city’s boom in business travel. In what ways do you anticipate the Los Angeles meeting and events industry changing in the coming years, and how do you plan on adapting to those changes at The Event Team?
GC: It is such an exciting time to live and work in Los Angeles right now, especially for the meeting and events community. From the return of the NFL to the pursuit of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games to the countless hotels and multi-use spaces being developed throughout the city, you can literally see our city growing in order to accommodate being one of the world’s top destinations. It’s imperative for us to keep pace with that growth by not just knowing the new and interesting offerings around town, but also by maintaining an awareness of the client experience and staying true to our commitment of personal and individualized service.

The Praises

At The Event Team, we’re so excited to boast another DMCP certification on staff! (This makes 4 and counting.) Geraldine’s colleagues are always quick to sing her praises:

“I was very impressed when Geraldine asked me if she could go for her DMCP certificate. I had been in the industry over 25 years when I took the test and it was still not easy to pass. To her credit she stuck with it and took the test with a very short time to prepare. She passed with flying colors and I am very  proud of her.”
Matt Robbins, President

“From working long hours in the office to being available to help every department, I wasn’t sure how she was going to find time to study for the test, but the determination and dedication she showed throughout her weeks leading to the test was unreal! I am proud that she was able to add yet another accomplishment to her academic belt and passed the DMCP!”
Marcie Booth, Senior Operations Manager

“I’m so proud of how she conquered the DMCP, just like almost everything else she sets out to do. I love that her door is always open and appreciate the fact that she’s as willing to learn as she is to teach. Her leadership is the heartbeat of the L.A. office and I’m grateful to work with her.”
Jameela Jackson, National Sales Manager

“Geraldine’s an awesome leader of the L.A. office; I don’ know what we would do without her!”
John-Carlo Boyle, Sales Assistant

“Behind every successful team is a boss that always seems to know everything. So it wasn’t surprising when Geraldine passed her DMCP exam (with flying colors, no doubt)! Leadership isn’t a skill, it’s a talent and Geraldine is extremely talented!”
Aimee Nobleza, Operations Assistant

That’s SoCal – Underground Edition

While Southern California is known for major attractions like SeaWorld, Universal Studios Hollywood, Disneyland, and more, we thought it might be cool to showcase some local venue and activity options that you may not read about in the typical meeting planner and travel guides. We asked Taryn and JC to scout out some of SoCal’s hidden gems and underground offerings. Check out their findings below:
