Making a Difference: April Gulley and The Bernie Project

One of the best things about The Event Team is that you can check out but you can never leave. We’ve found over the years that former employees usually remain a part of The Event Team family; we always enjoy hearing about their new career paths, new homes, or new families. One former employee, April Gulley, is on a particularly interesting journey that incorporates all three aspects.

April started working at The Event Team in 2001 as an Operations Manager and working her way up to Director of Operations. After leaving the company in 2004, she remained in the events industry, working as an independent planner for large-scale events all over the world such as The Superbowl and The Olympics.

A trip to Uganda in 2009 re-routed the course of April’s life. Watch this amazing video to find out how The Bernie Project came to life:

We caught up with April to ask how her experiences in the event planning industry helped prepare her for The Bernie Project:
“As an event planner it’s all about logistics and making the impossible possible in the most interesting circumstances. I’ve used my 15 years in the industry to network, connect and find out-of-the-box solutions to raise money and find resources to get The Bernie Project off the ground and running. The ability to multitask and keep a number of balls in the air in Uganda is very similar to planning a large event back here in the U.S.”

All of us at The Event Team are so proud of April’s efforts to make a difference in the world. From President Matt Robbins:
“We have had a lot of people pass through our doors, but we are particularly proud of April. We always knew she would be going places but we couldn’t have guessed it would be to Uganda to help children lead a better life. The Event Team is proud that we were a stop along her way.”
