San Diego Venue Report: Tiki Takeover

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” seems to be the mentality when it comes to San Diego’s speakeasy-chic restaurant/bar scene. What can we say, we looooooveeee our reclaimed furniture, mason jars and market string lighting! Lately, though, we’ve noticed a new trend jockeying for position all over America’s Finest City – we like to call it the Tiki Takeover. Playful yet sophisticated, this new movement allows San Diego’s finest mixologists to flex their creative muscles and re-imagine the traditional Tiki cocktails of yore. Here are a few modern Tiki clubs around town where you can mai-tai one on:

Cat Eye Club (Gaslamp District)

Located in the heart of East Village across from Petco Park, Cat Eye Club is a retro cocktail lounge and tiki bar inspired by the late 50’s, early 60’s nightlife culture. It pays homage to mid century cocktail trends with an emphasis on classic and tiki cocktails. The intimate space is available for private buyouts for groups of 20-5o, or can be combined with the adjacent Blind Burro for larger groups.

Miss B’s Coconut Club (Pacific Beach)

Miss B’s Coconut Club is a revival of Mission Beach’s colorful past, and the pin-up girl’s Caribbean curves and demure smile have returned to welcome everyone who steps inside. The venue’s décor evokes a celebration of Mission Beach’s nautical and maritime past, which takes form as an inspired interpretation of a 30’s-style sailor tiki club. Rum is the star here, and has a leading role in a creative list of grownup cocktails, which includes shareable, tiki-inspired punches and bowls. Miss B’s offers 2,000+ square foot of indoor/outdoor space for up to 138 guests.

False Idol

Bursting with tiki artwork and custom carvings, Little Italy’s False Idol was developed by CH Projects, who also brought Ironside and Craft & Commerce to the trendy neighborhood. (The entrance is actually hidden within C & C). The small but mighty bar packs a punch when it comes to modern tiki mixology, offering 36 cocktails and a collection of more than 200 rare and vintage rums. We suggest hosting your VIPs for an after hours nightcap at False Idol after a Little Italy dine around.
