That’s SoCal: Summer Blockbuster Edition

Since this month’s edition of That’s SoCal finds us smack in the middle of summer blockbuster season, we challenged Taryn and John-Carlo to find Southern California’s must entertaining and unique cinema-watching experiences. From the rooftops of Los Angeles to the drive-ins of Palm Springs, here are some great ways to catch upcoming hits, family favorites, cult classics, and more!

Rooftop Cinema Club
Experience Hollywood movies they way they should be experinced – In Hollywood, under the stars, and on a rooftop. The Montalbán has started its summer film series and its one not to be missed! In addition to the screening, The Rooftop Cinema Club will offer delicious drinks and farm-to-table dining from the Farmer’s Belly Café.

Street Food Cinema
Established in 2012, Street Food Cinema aims to be an experience to remember, not just an outdoor venue to watch a movie at. In addition to the films being played there will be a host of local food trucks that could satisfy even the pickiest eaters. There will also be a band performing before each movie starts, so don’t forget to get there early!

Santa Barbara

Bogie and Bacall: Free Summer Cinema
UCSB Arts & Lectures begin their bi-weekly outdoor summer movie series July 6th with a showing of The Maltese Falcon. There will be two showings a week per film, once on Wednesday at Campbell Hall, and the other on Friday at the County Courthouse Sunken Gardens. Both nights are free of charge, but be sure to bring a blanket or low back chair for seating.

SBIFF: The Wave Film Festival – France
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has big plans for summer by rolling out the next edition of “The Wave Film Festival”. The event consists of a 5 day cinematic journey with each new festival focusing on a different country or region. This year’s festival concentrates on French culture in film. Expect to see 11 brand new films at the historic Riviera Theatre.

Great Park Movies on the Lawn
Bring your blanket, chair and snacks to the Orange County Great Park at dusk under the big balloons. Food trucks are available to make your evening complete. Come Fridays for fan favorites or Saturdays for the latest blockbuster hits.

San Diego

Cinema at The Balboa
Watch classic movies at the historic Balboa Theatre. The historic theatre unveils a new state-of-the-art 4k digital projector, full stage screen, and high definition sound. Four to six films are planned to be featured each month. Check out the 30th Anniversary of Aliens Wednesday, July 20th at 7:00pm!
