Over the last couple months, we’ve been following up with our past interns to see where they’ve landed in the hospitality industry. Our latest interview features Cara Usher who worked with The Event Team in 2011 under VP of Sales & Marketing Bill Yahres. Cara is a San Diego State University alum who earned her degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. She is currently employed as Sales Coordinator at The Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa. Bill had high praise for Cara:

What did you like about The Event Team’s Internship Program? Were you able to develop or work on any particular skills?
I loved everything about it! I was able to not only gain an insight to the event side of the hospitality, but learned how to sell San Diego as a whole. Interning at The Event Team was what made me fall in love with selling and servicing. Being from out of state, interning at The Event Team allowed me to develop my knowledge of San Diego restaurants, venues, activities, etc.
How did your knowledge of the Hospitality industry grow as a result of working with The Event Team?
I learned the aspects of the event side of the hospitality industry, as well as how to sell San Diego as a destination! I was introduced to so many different activities, restaurants, venues, and vendors.
Tell us a little bit about your current position.
I handle inquiries for prospective client’s, assist sales managers in planning and scheduling sales call appointments, create proposals, and market research projects. I conduct site inspections for social room blocks and assist in planning and organizing manager’s site visits and meetings, as well as prospect group business through solicitation blitz projects, research, etc. As of late, I have also began entering into the Convention Services aspect, where I will service small groups.
What are you up to these days? Any interests/hobbies outside of work?
Outside of work, you can find me mostly outdoors..on the beach with a book, on a hike, or running on the board walk! Other hobbies of mine include traveling, cooking, and attending concerts and country festivals.
