Case Study #1: U Build It Bike Rally - Philanthropic Teambuilding Event in San Diego
Sales Manager: Dick Burson Operations Manager: Sally Davis Number of Guests: 60 Number of Additional Dedicated Event Team Staff: 6 Number of Vendors: 7
How The Event Team met Client's Goals & Objectives: The clients requested that we build 16 bicycles and have children at the finish to receive their bikes. It would only take 8 teams about ½ hour to build the 16 bikes, so we incorporated the adventure rally with challenges to make it into a real event.
Noteworthy Challenges and/or Accomplishments:
This group was very specific as to which philanthropic event they wanted to do: build 16 bikes for children and have the children present to accept them. Interestingly, it is often difficult to find a charity that can bring children to an event like this. Examples: Toys for Tots will collect bicycles all year round, but they simply store them in a warehouse to be given out at Christmas time. Home Start has very deserving children but they come from extremely distressed home situations, often including abuse. Many of those children are in hiding... we would never get to see them in public. Ronald McDonald Center is for sick children who could not come to a public event either. The Boys and Girls Clubs have children who are very needy but are not in hiding or ill so they are a good choice for this type of event. This Boys and Girls Club came from Barrio Logan, a very rough neighborhood. The children had to earn the bicycles with good behavior, good attendance and other positive behavior markers.
Another task we faced was writing a new rally for this particular hotel property. Thanks to our great relationship with the sales team onsite, the hotel's CSM helped The Event Team gain access to the Scripps Integrative Health Fitness Center next door, enabling us to expand the rally route and utilize a grassy area inside their track for a physical challenge. It was perfect for this event!
Thoughts from the Client: "I want to thank you and your great team for providing a great afternoon of fun, teambuilding, and charity for our group this week! It was well received and being able to have the kids there with our folks made quite and impression with them. We heard a couple kids wonder if they were in Hawaii by being there on that site...so we should never take anything for granted!!"
